Evaluate bacterial or viral encephalitis, meningitis, meningoencephalitis, mycobacterial or fungal infection, primary or secondary malignancy, leukemia/malignant lymphoma of CNS, trauma, vascular occlusive disease, heredofamilial, and/or degenerative processes.

Specimen Type

Cerebrospinal Fluid. For BAL sample type, order BAL.

Specimen Collection / Processing Instructions

Hematology department should received collection tube #3 in a CSF collection

Stability

STAT testing is recommended to due cellular degeneration of CSF components. Viability of specimen will be determined once received in the laboratory.


Room temperature: Unacceptable
Refrigerated: 24 hours
Frozen: Unacceptable

Unacceptable Specimen Conditions

Improper labeling, quantity not sufficient for analysis, specimen received frozen, specimen more than 24 hours old
