Quantitative culture to identify bacterial causes of urinary tract infections

Specimen Type

Specimen Requirements

Preferred: specimen preserved urine in BD C&S transport tube or Boric acid transport tube,
Will also accept: unpreserved urine specimen in sterile container

Alternate Specimen Type

Urine (Clean Catch, Midstream, Catheter, Foley catheter, Nephrostomy, Kidney, Suprapubic, Pediatric collection)

Minimum Sample Volume

1 ml urine

Gram stain is performed by request only

Stability

Preserved Urine: Ambient 48 hours, Refrigerated 48 hour
Unpreserved Urine: Ambient 2 hours, Refrigerated 24 hours

Unacceptable Specimen Conditions

24-hour urine collections, bag urine, and “dirty” urine collection for culture. Urine contaminated with stool or toilet water will be rejected. Delayed transport of unpreserved urine (greater than two hours at room temperature or greater than 24 hours refrigerated).
